The Firm

James Frederick Potts — Attorney

James files and prosecutes patents over a wide range of technologies, from internal combustion engines, autonomous vehicles, wind turbines, jet engines, and steam/gas turbines to surgical systems, cancer treatments, catheters, and various other medical devices to textiles, cameras, photolithography, security systems, printers, and holograms. In addition to prosecution, he also does opinion work and freedom-to-operate analysis, and he handles appeals before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (“PTAB”).

He is admitted to the North Carolina Bar (2016) and licensed to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (2018). James worked for two years for a mid-sized, DC-area patent firm before setting out on his own as a solo practitioner and later founding this firm.

James graduated with honors from the University of North Carolina School of Law. Before that, he attended North Carolina State University, where he obtained his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering, specializing in thermodynamics and fluid dynamics during graduate school.
